Blackened M81 is a passion project that brings together three immensely talented and vastly experienced cigar enthusiasts – Jonathan Drew, Founder & President of Drew Estate, James Hetfield, Metallica co-founder, singer & guitarist and Rob Dietrich, the Master Distiller of and blender of BLACKENED American Whisky.
Having been friends for well over a decade. Dietrich and Drew always wanted to combine their talents to collaborate on something special, and this seemed to be the perfect opportunity. After two years of sampling cigars together, the group decided on the exact flavour profile that would become Blackened Cigars M81 by Drew Estate.
Blackened M81 presents a journey through different Maduro leaves, starting with a thick and oily Maduro wrapper that’s grown in the rich volcanic soil of Mexico’s San Andres Valley. The binder and filler blend of Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro tobaccos include the boldest Pennsylvania Broadleaf ligero in Drew Estate’s vast tobacco inventory.
This cigar is dark, rich and powerful with alluring notes of espresso, leather and dark chocolate.

The name Tres Compadres means “three friends.” In this case, it is a tribute from Kristoff owner Glen Case to two of his close friends who recently passed away, Chuck Finch and Rolando Villamil. Case would often refer to the three of them as the three amigos. Rolando Villamil is a name that may be pretty familiar if you cover the cigar industry, as he ran Tabacalera Von Eicken in the Dominican Republic, where all of Kristoff’s cigars are produced.
In addition to being a special tribute from Case, the Tres Compadres marks an essential step in the evolution of the Kristoff brand. The Kristoff portfolio did not have puro blends – namely, blends with tobacco from a single country. All of that would change in 2023 when Kristoff released two puro blends containing 100% Nicaraguan tobacco: Kristoff Tres Compadres and Kristoff Nicaragua. The wrapper is Nicaraguan Habano, the remainder of the blend uses tobaccos from Condega, Estelí, and Jalapa. The Toro is a little thicker and little longer than your average Toro measuring 6 ¼ x 54.
The Tres Compadres Toro delivered a nice amount of complexity including notes of natural tobacco, earth, berry, cream, cedar, and pepper. These flavors were medium-bodied. As for the strength, the Tres Compadres Toro started out mild to medium before progressing to medium in the second third. The flavors are nuanced and balanced making for an excellent smoking experience.
For Kristoff this is the third time they have placed a cigar on a Cigar Coop Countdown – and all three of those have been in the top ten, and two of those times they have been in the top five. Kristoff also lands the Dominican Republic its 7th cigar on the 2024 Countdown.

Since the introduction of the My Father brand in 2008, the Garcia Family seem to come up with hit blend after hit blend. After a lengthy wait for international availability, we are delighted to launch two vitolas from the My Father The Judge range. Originally released at the end of 2016, the My Father The Judge Grand Robusto was named Cigar Journal No1 Cigar of the Year 2017 and has just been named as Cigar Aficionado Cigar of the Year for 2024 with a rating of 98.
The Judge features three different Nicaraguan fillers, all grown on Garcia family farms as well as Corojo and Criollo binders and finished with an Ecuadorian Sumatran wrapper. This full bodied cigar starts off slightly salty, with interesting woody and almond tones. It is unbelieveably smooth, nutty, delicately acidic and develops subtle notes of anise, coffee and bread in the very creamy smoke texture.
