If there is one particularly famous cigar factory in Havana, it is Partagas. The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas and it has been making the cigars that bear his name ever since.
A Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep, earthly flavour. The character of its blend springs from a selection of filler and binder tobaccos grown in the Vuelta Abajo zone and chosen for their unmistakable richness of flavour and aroma.
The best known of all Partagas is the Serie D No. 4, the robusto size that formed part of the legendary Partagas alphabet series that dates back to the 1930’s.

Originally released to celebrate Perdomo’s 10th Anniversary, the range was expanded to to include the Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro. This cigar is a Nicaraguan puro blended with a dark, oily six year old Cuban seed Nicarguan wrapper that has been bourbon barrel aged for an additional 14 months and is paired with six year old Cuban seed Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos. In 2021 the Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro Epicure was named Cigar of the Year by Cigar Journal.
This box pressed medium to full cigar has naturally sweet flavours of cocao, espresso, caramel and pepper that produces a smooth and soft smoke.

For the Alma Fuerte, a team of five blenders, including Plasencia, Sr. and Jr., worked to create the cigar from 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos. The blend focuses around the family’s Criollo ’98 seed, using tobaccos from each of the major growing regions of Nicaragua (Condega, Estelí, Jalapa, and Ometepe). In addition, the Plasencia are using some of their rarest and most premium-grade leaves from their vast tobacco inventories.
The latest addition to this line, the Sixto I is a new option for those who enjoy this luxurious smoke but don’t want the full intensity, the Sixto I is like a Cappuccino compared to the Sixto II which is more like an espresso.
The blend has been slightly tweaked for the Sixto I and an different wrapper finishes this cigar which is a Colorado Claro which takes away some of the intensity.

Quai d’Orsay was established in 1973 and originally aimed at the French market. It was named after an avenue in Paris that once housed the headquarters of SEITA, the former French tobacco company. Until now the only size from the brand available in the UK was the Coronas Claro. However as part of the brand’s relaunch, there will be two new sizes available, both of which will be presented in new packaging and dressed in new redesigned bands.
The first of the two new sizes to arrive in the UK is the Quai d’Orsay No.50 and measures 4 3/8” (110mm) x 50 ring gauge. This is the same vitola as the Partagas Serie D No.5 and offers smokers a lighter alternative in a popular size.
Classified as Light to Medium by Habanos S.A, the Quai d’Orsay brand is a wonderful cigar that is being given a well-deserved moment in the spot light. A hidden gem no more…?
